| I think what is happening with hip hop is completely normal, though I don't see it as the ghettoization of our society. I think your base premise is flawed. Hip hop was puck rock was rock and roll was blues and scots irish folk etc etc etc. The list goes on forever. All of those forms of music I named were once seen as "lower" forms of music popular to the poor and/or minority groups in America. Eventually a few better off (white) guys started listening to it, and the music business starts noticing. They get ideas about making money, water down the poor people music and market it to a broader (white) audience, and suddenly they are rolling in more money then they know what to do with. Eventually this vanguard of rich white guys gets bored with that kind of music and returns to the poorer parts of town to discover the next big thing and the cycle repeats itself. That's it. It's not society becoming a ghetto. It's business co-opting minority or poor culture for a buck. If there's a few misguided middle class guys who take themselves too seriously, so be it. That's just a side effect. Not the cause. |

I had Hughes Net installed yesterday and now fear I made a mistake. I was unaware of the Fair Access Policy up until I violated it within 2 hours of installation. I guess I can deal with scheduling big downloads such as game patches during the free time, but I'm confused about what I can do for the other 21 hours of the day. Am I using my daily quota when I watch videos on YouTube or video news clips? I enjoy a little World of Warcraft and understand that it'll be slower and that I'll have to download patches during the middle of the night, but am I downloading anything when I'm just playing? Is there anyone out there who is happy with their Hughes Net experience? |
| I'm sorry. Hughesnet is really sneaky with their FAP. I didn't know either until it had already been installed. I believe though that they have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. I am very happy with the reliability and speed of it but the Fair Access Policy isn't very fair. Any data transmitted to you is counted in the daily limit. All videos, web pages, itunes downloads, packets going between your IM program and the server, http, ftp, everything. They have a site that will check how many megabytes you have used up, but it has never worked for me. Their tech support sucks, it's outsourced to the middle east. You either can't hardly hear them on the phone or you can't understand what they are saying because of the heavy accents. All in all, the service is good but right now they just don't have the network capacity to serve all their subscribers. It's like dialup was several years ago with aol and busy signals. Eventually they built the network big enough to give everyone unlimited use. |
